In Their Eyes

————

As a collector of antique war badges and patches, I felt it appropriate to research their origins and create a publication as a memoir to them and their owners.

While antique in its nature, the publications typography and layouts are meant to introduce modern and experimental elements. The design is built upon a grid that is broken intentionally to build tension and intrigue. The typography, simulating a real typewriter, goes through phases of being inked and dry throughout the book. Some type intersects with other type to force the viewer to look at the letterforms rather than the information.

————

Each layout was created by hand and then photographed to be placed into the book. These layouts included antique photos, notes, and hand recreated letters. Once the book was printed, each page was then tea stained and then bound together with glue. The pages were then folded and scraped with sandpaper and concrete to simulate weathering.

————

Of course, the book was originally based upon the badges which I owned and cherished. I researched the badges as well as the different types of badges that would be found in different wars on different personnel. Adhered to the front cover of the publication is a U.S. Air Force badge from Europe.

Throughout the second war, husband and father, Frank, was stationed across seas to fight. Leaving his wife, Polly, and daughter at home, they only had pen and paper to communicate. Between pages in the book are notes from Frank to Polly and his daughter, from May 6 in 1994 to his unfortunate death telegram in August. Each letter has been individually weathered and created to be held and examined.
